UPDATE-PGPD Holds School Shooting Drill

The Prince George’s County Police Department, the Prince George’s County Fire Department, and the Prince George’s County Public Schools System are conducting a joint training exercise at Dr. Henry A. Wise High School in Upper Marlboro today to ensure public safety readiness for the upcoming school year.

This previously scheduled training scenario was set up weeks ago. It was not announced due to security concerns. However, in light of this morning's tragedy in Aurora, Colorado, the Prince George's County Police Department wanted to assure our community that we train for similar incidents and work diligently to be constantly prepared.

Realistic mock scenarios test our first responders’ capacities in the event of an emergency. Public safety and school officials regularly coordinate planned responses to potential critical incidents at schools.

Routinely scheduled exercises incorporate the nation’s best practices to provide our first responders with the necessary training in the event of a school emergency. “Our responsibility to protect our children begins with effective strategies, and is reinforced with joint training exercises with our public safety partners,” stated Chief Mark Magaw.
