VIDEO: Crackdown on Synthetic Marijuana Leads to Large Drug Seizures

Commander: "Synthetics are like crack on steroids"

As part of a months-long investigation into the illegal substance known as synthetic marijuana, the Prince George’s County Police Department on Thursday seized 1,652 packets of synthetic drugs and paraphernalia used to smoke the drug from three businesses in the county. The total street value of the synthetic drugs is $33,310.00.

Working with uniformed PGPD patrol officers, undercover Narcotic Enforcement Division (NED) detectives conducted search warrants at stores in Temple Hills, Capitol Heights and District Heights Thursday afternoon. Detectives targeted Global Discount Tobacco at 7089 Allentown Road, The Lucky Mart at 5240 Marlboro Pike and the Sunoco gas station at 7622 Marlboro Pike.

Major Jason Bogue, Commander of the PGPD’s NED, said, after the completion of Thursday’s three search warrants, “It’s critical our business owners know we won’t tolerate the illegal sale of these very dangerous substances. It’s equally critical parents hear this message: these packets resemble marijuana only in that the substance inside is leafy and green. Synthetics are like crack on steroids. The high is similar to the high a person gets after smoking PCP and the results can be equally as catastrophic.”

While synthetic marijuana is not a widespread problem in the county, the PGPD is working to keep it that way. The department is teaming up with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s office on developing legislation to combat this dangerous substance.
