Detectives Arrest Suspect in 2009 Cold Case Homicide

Larry Recio

Cold Case Unit detectives charged a suspect in connection with a homicide investigation in Landover from 2009. The suspect is 27-year-old Larry Recio. Recio is from Lanham but is currently in the custody of the Hazelton Federal Correctional Institution in West Virginia on unrelated charges.

On June 2, 2009, at about 11:45 pm, patrol officers were called to the 9000 block of Continental Place for the report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they discovered four victims outside suffering from gunshot wounds. Nineteen-year-old Shai Caldwell of Windflower Way in Bowie died of her injuries several hours later. The three additional victims survived their injuries.

Detectives developed Recio as the suspect and subsequently charged him in this case based on information from witnesses and evidence linking him to the shootings. The investigation reveals the victims were attending a graduation celebration the night of the shootings. Caldwell was not an intended victim. Detectives believe the suspect had been in an ongoing dispute with another group of males.

Recio is charged with first degree murder and several counts of attempted first degree murder.
